Simplicity Cribs Recalled

On September 21, 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of about one million cribs from Simplicity Inc. The reason noted for the recall is because the drop-side can detach from the crib. This detachment can then create a dangerous gap, and lead to the entrapment and suffocation of infants. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission release, two infants have died. Both deaths are attributed to older style hardware and upside down installation of the drop side. Their statement does also acknowledge seven infant entrapments and fifty-five incidents in these cribs. The CPSC did acknowledge that they are investigating an incident of a third infant’s death. This one is attributed to a crib with newer style hardware but upside down drop-side installation.

Parents and caregivers are cautioned to ensure that drop-side installation of all Simplicity cribs has been done right side up. According to the statement on the CPSC site, the drop-side failures resulted from both the hardware and crib design which had resulted in improper installation of the drop-side. There were two incidents reported in the recall that occurred when the drop-side was correctly installed with the older hardware.

Simplicity crib models included in the recall were: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. There were also some Simplicity cribs included in the recall that used the Graco logo: Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and the Trio. The model numbers involved in the recall were: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996. All of the cribs were made in China.
